37 year old, Swarnalatha, a known name in the South Indian film industry passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010. She died at Chennai’s private hospital at 11:20 am. The sources claim the reason for her death to be the lung infection.

Daughter of KC Cherukutty and Kalyani had music flowing in her veins. She was taught music by her father at the initial stage, who himself was a distinguished harmonium player and then took formal training in the Carnatic music.

Swarnalatha rose to fame with her song ‘Chinnanchirukiliye Kannamma’ in the film Neethikku Dhandanai in late 1980’s. The credit for this goes to the Music Composer of the film, MS Viswanathan who actually made her sing to his tunes.

The people best remember her for a song in the Hindi movie, ‘Rangeela’ starring Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff, ‘Hay rama yeh kya hua’. The music of the film was composed by the Oscar winning musician AR Rahman.

The much awaited Telugu movie of the year 2010, Brindavanam starring Jr NTR, Samantha and Kajal Aggarwal had a successful music launch yesterday, September 12, 2010 at Shilpa Kala Vedika, Madhapur, Hyderabad.

The music release event was hosted by the TV anchor & actress Udaya Bhanu and comedian Venu Madhav. Bigwigs of the southern film industry of India like director Rajamouli, actor Siddharth, music composer MM Keeravani, Young Rebel Star Prabhas, actresses Samantha & Kajal Agarwal, Raghavendra Rao (BA).

Brindavanam is directed by Vamsi Paidipally and the production part is handled by Dil Raju. Thaman S. has provided his music composition for the film. The film is said to be a family oriented film along with being a romantic thriller.

LFO lead singer, Rich Cronin dies at the age of 35 after fighting a long battle against Leukemia, of which he had been diagnosed from 2005. He is best known for the bands hit song ‘Summer Girls’. He died at the hospital after he had suffered with a massive stroke and died eventually on the 8th of September.

Melissa Holland, his manager, wrote on the behalf of his family on his Facebook account and intimated his fans and followers that, Rich has passed away. Her statment on the Facebook page is as follows – “On behalf of the Cronin family and all at the Hope Foundation and [his record label] Orange Freeze, thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts. Continue to post them as a tribute to a great man, a better artist and the best friend I could ever have”

Cronin hailed from Boston, in later age he joined the band group LFO in the late ’90s, along with his fellow band members which include, Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima. The band shot into fame after their hit of “Summer Girls”.

Mike Portnoy, drummer for Dream Theater announced on the 8th of September that he has left the band as he wants to pursue better ventures and challenges in his drumming career. He has been a part of Dream Theater since 25 years, in fact he has been in the band since the beginning.

The band has given an official comment over Mike’s departure, “To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness — regret — we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike’s stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.” – Dream Theater.

But this is not the end of Dream Theater, they state that they want to move ahead with the band’s future and probably give the fans what they want. They wish Mike the best in his musical career, as he was a very unique drummer and was also an integral part of Dream Theater.

Padma Bhushan awardee, Asha Bhosle will be celebrating her 77th birthday on September 8. One of the most versatile singers of the Bollywood, she has been lending her voice since past six decades and still continues to do so.

She has sung for almost all the leading ladies, right from Vyjayanthimala to Urmila Matondkar and also for all the leading music composers. The song, ‘Maang ke saath tumhara’ from the film Naya Daur that was released in the year 1957 can be called as her launching pad.

Mike Edwards, 62, of Electric Light Orchestra, died in a freak accident in near Devon, England. Mike Edwards used to be a cellist for the band during the years when the band was active. His accident took place when 1320 pound bale of hay which came tumbling down a steep hill and crushed and tried to avoid it but was crushed by it.

It is believed that the bale had been broken lose from a tractor that was working near by on the hill. Mike was with another musician in the vehicle, but he has escaped uninjured. Now the matter has become a mystery as how did only Mike die, as the Police have started to look on.

Mike had converted himself into a full fledged Buddhist and also changed his name with it, he renamed himself, Deva Pramada. He had to change his name because of his devotion towards Buddhism. Edwards was a cellist in the ELO, and has done number of hits with band during their active era.

In another celebrity and drugs case, American rapper T.I. and his wife have been arrested for possession of drugs. The arrest took place by the Los Angeles Police on Wednesday late night. T.I., real name, Clifford Harris and his wife Tameka Cottle were arrested were detained at the local Sheriff Headquarters Bureau.

The incident took place at Sunset Boulevard, when the couple were driving their car, and the Patrolling Police stopped. When the cops got the scent of marijuana in the vehicle, they arrested them for the possession of the drugs.

The rapper is a three time Grammy Award winner, and one of his awards was won for the song “My Love” in collaboration with Justin Timberlake. T.I. and his wife were released from L.A. police custody on a bail of $10,000. Many celebrities are getting involved in being busted by the police and having drugs with them, one of the latest example is Paris Hilton, who also had the possession of the green thing with her and was arrested too.

Guns N’ Roses lead Guitarist, Saul Hudson also known as Slash in the band, has filed the papers of divorce against his wife whom he had been married for nine years. Slash and his wife Perla Ferrar got married in the year 2001 and now have decided to separate for good.

Sources have said that the relationship between the couple is irreconcilable, and that divorce was the only option left. There had been great differences risen between them and matter were just getting worse in their married life. The couple had separated from each other on the 15th of July, and now they have decided to legally separate.

Lyricist Gulzar celebrates his birthday today that is August 18. Gulzar or Sampooran Singh Kalra has penned down many heart rendering songs for Bollywood.

Gulzar is also a poet and a director. He was born in the year 1936. He mainly writes in Hindi and Urdu languages. Apart from these languages he also has written in Braj, Khadiboli, Haryanvi and Marwari.

For his contribution in the fields of Arts, Gulzar was honoured with the nation award, Padma Bhushan in the year 2004. He is also the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award that he received in the year 2002.

Gulzar has been associated with almost all the best music directors from Bollywood. His list includes Rahul Dev Burman, A R Rahman, Vishal Bharadwaj, Sachin Dev Barman, Salil Chowdhury, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Anu Malik.

More recently, Gulzar has received a Grammy Award for his song in the Oscar winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The song is ‘Jai Ho’.
