The question now that has arisen states that, why is Naomi Campbell, who herself is a supermodel, has an important role in the trails of Charles Taylor. Charles Taylor has been prosecuted by the court on 11 counts, which includes the selling of diamonds and funding the war in Sierra Leone. The UN prosecutors have stated that the stones which Campbell had possessed were an important key to Taylor’s war trails.
The story goes back to 1997, during a dinner banquet hosted by Nelson Mandela. This banquet included all the top shots of politics and business, which also included Charles Taylor and Naomi Campbell. During the dinner, some of the staff of Taylor, went and gave a pouch to Campbell, which consisted of some three blood diamonds, as a gift.
The amount of money that Charles had revenued by selling these diamonds and funding the wars, has been estimated to be somewhere around $950 million. The wars within Sierra Leone continued for 11 brutal years, during which the Diamond producing areas were controlled by the Revolutionary United Front, which was directly supported by Taylor. The wars had resulted the death of around 120000 people in the country, which lasted for more than a decade.
