The earthquake hit the southern region of the Philippines on Saturday, that is, July 24, 2010 but it has not caused any damage, as informed by the officials.
The earthquake hit under the sea and was of 6.9 – magnitude. Since it hit deep inside it did not damage anything on the earth’s surface.
The US Geological Survey informed, “The quake hit the Moro Gulf off Mindanao Island at 7.15 am (4.45 am IST), the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology later reported a 6.9 magnitude.”
The Director of the USGS, Renato Solidum said, “The origin of the quake was 606 km underground so it was barely felt”.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, Hawaii has not issued any tsunami alert so far. The earthquake hit somewhere about 120 km to the southwest of Cotabato city and almost 900 km to southeast of Manila, the capital city of Philippines.
