Olympic Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili Dies in a Crash

A luge slider Nodar Kumaritashvili, from Georgia was reportedly killed on Friday after he crashed into a pole during a training session. The luge crash took place a few hours before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Canada.

The 21 year old Nodar Kumaritashvili was traveling at a speed of 90mph when he crashed and got flung into a pole. Doctors tried to revive him but it was too late.

In a statement, IOC President Jacques Rogge said: “Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete. The whole Olympic family is struck by this tragedy, which clearly casts a shadow over these Games.”

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games kick off to day in Canada.
